So many years growing up I would ask the other kids in my school what their parents did?
Sometimes I would get an real answer or I would get "something with airplanes" (back in the day you usually didn't hear...something with computers, like you hear the kids say today).
Growing up I knew exactly what my parents did.
My Dad was a real estate Broker for over 40 years. I remember being with him on a Sunday and running up and down the office halls (no agents there, or if they were, I didn't care)...."FRAN MORAN, THE REAL ESTATE MAN!!!" at the top of my lungs. Heavens knows if he was able to get anything done on those quick drop ins.
My Mom owned and operated a furniture store for over 30 years. I remember being at her place (lots of times, as I worked there in high school!)...but I had a real idea of what she did day in and day out for a living. Reshaping the "floor", helping measure stuff for customers, paying the bills to keep the doors open. It was all very real for me.
I could see how hard my parents worked for their money.
Most kids I grew up with had parents that worked regular hours, regular days. My parents didn't...
I went to training this March for Broker/Owner classes at RE/MAX International. My boys all flew up to meet me (as we planned a little vacation afterwards), but we had a day in Denver at the RE/MAX Headquarters.
They got to see all of the great flags that RE/MAX represents, they saw me "graduate" with my class of Owners.
I think they had a better understanding of what the company that I work so hard to represent, meant.
They were in awe that RE/MAX worked in 73 different countries and so many different languages. I think it gave them a different perspective then just seeing me on the phone, running out to show a house, emailing offers and counter-offers and such. They had more questions than I ever thought they would. They truly showed an interest.
They SAW the monster company behind little 'ole me.
Ever stop to think if you kids have a real understanding of what you do for a living and how it's shaping their future...?
