Hurricane Party on the Poop Deck- Galveston, Texas

Well, I thought I had heard it all until my husband came home from working at the shelters and mentioned something about a hurricane party...What?

I thought what is wrong with these people...maybe too much alcohol and not enough brains?  Why would they defy an evacuation.  Why would some people choose to stay in their homes and not leave even though when warned by Police?  I also had heard that anyone that defied the Police (who were by the way, trying to save their lives by going door to door) then asked them to write their social security numbers on their arms so the Police could identify them later.  ????  What gives.

Some of these people actually were rescued later on and DID have their numbers on their arms!  Can you image turning away help and then realizing later that you might have made a deadly decision for your family?  Unfathomable to me.

(This is the biggest I could make this picture...but her face says it all!  She is standing on the seawall in Galveston, Texas (not very far from the Poop Deck)

So, here is some interesting stuff about the people that are partying on the Poop Deck in Galveston, Texas the night BEFORE the hurricane strikes.  It's slow to start but there is a woman in this video that has a poem about America that is interesting.

Would love your comments about the rest of this crowd!

Do they get a ton o' poop on the poop deck?  I think that would be the only way to keep me away from that place, not during a hurricane though.  Those people are DARING!  Looks like fun though..."Where the elite meet in their bare feet".  What a spectacular motto!

NOW that is funny...I don't care who you are.  KM

I cannot really see her expression.  I think these people are idiots.  However, a blogger here once told me she was preparing for a Hurricane by drinking a Hurricane.  It was pretty funny when someone else said, "I think a Margarita is coming."  The bloggers were just kiddin' around but those Galvenites are nuts!

Kudos to your hubby for helping people in time of need.  Tell him I said so!

Sheila...

I agree with Mel, but at what point does the obligation to save some one's life that refused to evacuate become a responsibility? Why should the lives of good peopled but put at risk to save fools?

Because every village has an idiot, Richard.  I can say it and get away with it because I am a Texan.

Some more than others, eh Mel?

Funny...my new neighbor (from Massachusetts) asked me, "why would these people stay?"

I said, "Because they are Texans and think a loaded rifle is all that they need !"  Unfortunately, some do have this mentality!

K-just think you and I were going to be celebrating ourselves on the Poop Deck when we go to the Top 500 for RE/MAX-Texas three weeks from now...which I think somehow will be post poned...because they are not going to even have electricity for weeks!

Melody-I'm with you on the margarita's!  And I will tell my hubby, thanks for thinking of him!

Richard-I'm with you on this more than you know...my husband is a Fire Fighter and a lot of times they are not fighting fires they are first responders, high water rescuers, etc.  and risk their lives all the time for others that don't even THINK about their families safety first.

Those idiots that had to be rescued should be billed for the expense.  It angers me that they think nothing of putting the rescuers lives in danger.

I'm with the folks who say you should be billed if you have to be rescued  after refusing an evacuation order, and a few hot days on a roof is character building for those who do not understand the meaning of EVACTUATE! Having worked a few hurricane relief efforts (with Katrina being the last time I volunteered to be abused by people who refuse to use a little forethought), I must say the sense of entitlement by people who chose their own fate is quite off-putting to those who are just trying to help those who truly need help.

Lisa- Your right.  I'm right with you on the anger level!

Holly-Wow!  So I have heard from other volunteers...the problem is if billed we would have to set up another entity to collect !

I watched the folks at the Poop Deck on Fox news before IKE hit..  If you choose to stay thats your business..  but know that  when the poop hits the fan so speak your own your own..  and you should have a last resort plan  that doesnt require you to dial 911..

Sheila - These people that made the decision to stay (if they are still alive) must not have  brain in their head. If they did survive I would imagine they will be quick to pack up and leave if it should ever happen again. You don't fool with nature and never under-estimate the strength and force of wind and water.

was the poop deck obliterated during the storm?

Posted by lesly over 3 years ago

We had a huricane party but it wasn't by choice.  I had my inlaws come to stay with us as well as my mother and grandmother.  My inlaws live in Seabrook and they went back to yesterday to see if their house was still there and all they lost was their fence.  My mother and grand mother are still with us since no power.  I live close to Katy and we got power on late Sunday night.  It was a scary storm.

I guess it was their right to stay, but it is mother natures right to kill off the stupid.

Steven -I'm with you on that since my husband gets those 911 calls!

Carl & Ceil- right on!  I'm sure some of them have learned their lesson!

David-glad everyone is okay..

Itaewon-so true

Those who chose to stay at the poop deck maybe weren't the brightest bulbs in the box but legally, they were still at an age that they could make the choice to kill themselves, sadly enough, but I've been so curious and concerned about the innocent children whose parents chose to ignore mandatory evacuation orders and put their kids in harms way.  Does the state of Texas or the Child Protection Agency warn those that make choices to put children in harms way that they will be charged with Child Endangerment?  I don't see any difference between endangering their lives by a deadly hurricane and disregarding orders to protect them or by telling a child to run across a busy freeway during traffic hour!  The child MIGHT make it across safely but there's a really good chance that the child won't!  Maybe there is some warning already to parents that don't protect their children and I just never hear about it on tv since I'm in Arizona but to me, I would think that would be taken very seriously by the state of Texas. The parent's are even teaching the children to disregard and disrespect the very authority that is there to help them.  Please enlighten me on the facts because this has always been a concern for me.

Much appreciation~*

During the eye of the storm many calls came in about people who wanted to be rescued and the city officials had to leave them where they were.  Thankfully they did not put our hard working firefighters, medics and cops in danger.  Mandatory evacuation is pretty plain and simple in my book.  My very good friend stayed and had to retreat to her attic.  I worried about her for days.  During the eye of the storm she text me to tell me she had to seek shelter higher up.  I worried and worried for days.  I was beyond mad at her but she lost everything she owns so I got over it quickly.

Many people who stayed in Bolivar will NEVER be found.  A 10 year old boy had to float to the Baytown area from Bolivar.  10 YEARS OLD.  HIS PARENTS SHOULD BE JAILED IF THEY ARE EVEN ALIVE.

WE HAD SOME IDIOTS THAT STAYED ON ONE OF THE PIERS WE LOST.  THEY HAD TO TAKE A BOAT TO THE SAN LUIS DURING THE EY OF THE STORM (sorry my caps lock was stuck on).  How are they not being charged.  They just stated it would be fun to see what a storm did.

My husband is a paramedic and has but his own life on the line for other many times.

Also the people at the Poop Deck are Poop Deck people.  This is hard to explain if you are not from Galveston but they have been loyal fans of that place and these folks specifically apparently loyal idiots.  I have been to the Poop Deck myself a few times and let me tell you its an interesting trip.

I'm not trying to sound evil but lives were lost for a dumb reason.  Leave your stuff afterall its just stuff.  That is what insurance is for.
